Virginia Highlands Festival
July 24 -
August 8 2010
Abingdon, VA
ABINGDON, VA — Just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, in a valley formed by the Holston River is Abingdon, a town rich in history and tradition. Abingdon is proud of its history and rich heritage. Strolling down shaded brick sidewalks in the 20-square-block historic district, it's as if one has stepped back in time. Easily imagined are the nights spent here by Daniel Boone, ghostly sounds echoing in The Martha Washington Inn, and the applause of farmers at the Barter Theatre. The Virginia Highlands Festival began in 1948 and, over the years, has grown and flourished. Today it is one of the top 100 tourist events in North America and one of the top 20 in the Southeast — offering plenty of entertainment, an enormous antiques market, juried art and photography competitions, and a juried arts and crafts show, as well as nationally-known writers, lecturers, and visual and performing artists. |
This year the Virginia Highlands Festival will take place on July 24-August 8, 2010 with the theme, "Piece the future from the Past". Each year the festival commissions an artist to create a signature piece to represent the festival and it’s theme. In conjunction with Virginians for the Arts 2010 theme “Minds Wide Open: Women in the Arts,” the Virginia Highlands Festival is “Piece the Future from the Past,” and Audra Rasnake of Glad Spring, VA, has been selected as the signature artist.Browse through the many vendors offering fine art, photography, home and garden items and an array of handmade crafts. Stop by the Antiques Market and discover those special, hard-to-find items at this 45,000-square-foot market. Antique lovers spend days browsing through tents filled with an impressive array of fine formal and country furniture, top-end collectibles, folk art, jewelry, accessories, books and primitives. Also enjoy live music and living history programs throughout the festival. For details and further information on the festival call (800) 435-3440 or visit www.vahighlandsfestival.org. |
