Washington, DC, VA

WASHINGTON, DC - Held on the first weekend of summer each year, Safeway's Barbecue Battle showcases the Barbecue industry on an almost mile-long stretch of Historic Pennsylvania Avenue in our Nation's Capital. This June 26-27, 2010 Safeway's Annual Barbecue Battle will bring together tens of thousands of DC residents and tourists alike to celebrate BBQ, America's favorite pastime, in an exciting weekend of great food, fun, friends, and family entertainment.

In a scenic downtown Washington setting, top teams will gather from north to south and east to west, to cook-off for over $40,000 in cash and prizes in three major competition barbecue contests on a single weekend. On Saturday, a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned contest will feature chicken, beef and pork categories. There will also be a special contest with a prize of $2,500 and an impressive trophy going to the “Rancher's Reserve Beef Champion.” Contestants are supplied with free Rancher's beef brisket for this contest. On Sunday, a Memphis in May (MIM) Pork BBQ Contest will focus on whole hog, rib and shoulder categories.

In addition to a world class Barbecue contest, Safeway's Barbecue Battle hosts a veritable BBQ tradeshow, featuring the latest in cooking techniques with demonstrations by chefs and contestants on seven stages. Sauce and seasoning manufactures and others in the barbecue and grilling industries sample and demonstrate their wares throughout the event site. Product manufactures such as Kingsford, Kraft, General Mills, Chinet and others, sample products in Safeway's 300' long sampling Pavilion in the center of the event site while celebrity chef's offer cooking tips on Safeway's Cooking Demonstration Stage.

Festival PhotoTop barbecue restaurants and caterers from across the country offer all varieties of mouth-watering barbecue and wage their own battle in a People's Choice contest, while great rock, R&B, jazz and blues bands perform on three stages. The Battle hosts many exciting interactive exhibits each year like the NBA Nation tour providing more exciting entertainment, with children's activities, games, prizes and more to round out the family fun!

In addition to all the great food and fun, Safeway's Barbecue Battle has raised over one million dollars for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Washington in past years and provided free exhibit space and funding opportunities to dozens of other non-profit organizations. The Safeway Barbecue Battle has garnered many awards including being voted a “Top 10 BBQ Event” by The Travel Channel and Discovery.com.
